Fragrance Review: Estee Sensuous

Estee Sensuous by Estee Lauder

Released in 2008 along the tag line of “Every woman wears it her way”, Estee Lauder’s Sensuous perfume is indeed a sensual fragrance.  This fragrance was developed by the perfumer Annie Buzatnian and features different floral and woody notes with a twist.

 The bottle:

The bottle is a very simple one. It is made with heavy glass and has long wavy lines that is supposed to make an elegant impression, but it fails to catch the attention of those perfumista that likes to collect and display their fragrances.

Fragrance Notes

Top: Jasmine, Magnolia, Lily

Middle: Amber,Woodsy,Ylang ylang

Base: Sandalwood, Mandarin Orange,Pepper,White Honey

The scent:

Being true to its name, Sensuous starts off with the a very inviting scent of floral notes. However, this opening quickly transitions into a skin scent with the dry down of jasmine. It is a very linear scent and you’d be smelling the middle and base notes all throughout the day.

Key takeaways:

  • This scent lasts for a very long time.

Perfume Q and A

Our Sense of Smell

q

Our Sense of Smell

Trying Different Fragrances and Olfaction

Our sense of smell develops earlier than the rest of our senses that’s why we can already recognize our parent’s scent at two days old, babies are able to locate their mother ‘s breast so they can feed  and  show arouall about olfactionsal or aversion to other smell.

Recalling: Connection:Emotion

Our sense of smell  is amazing, it is  of all senses intimately linked with our memory. It is the one that evokes certain memories.  You may even recall something that you are not specifically paying attention, like recalling the smell of your favorite food when you were young, or the fragrance that your grandma used to wear. Our sense of smell can trigger our brain to remember a long forgotten experience, it can conjure a certain emotion and feelings.

On Fragrance: How many different fragrances I can try without confusing my sense of smell?

All through the day, we can smell a lot of different things and surprisingly able to distinguish most of it without having a dilemma. However, when it comes to trying and smelling fragrances this will be different.  Experts only suggest trying a maximum of 3 perfumes at the same time to avoid the risk of confusing your nose. When your sense of smell has too much exposure to  different fragrances at the same time, you will not be able to distinguish properly its content.

How do I effectively try multiple fragrances?

Apply the first fragrance to your wrist, just a single spray will do. Then apply the second perfume to your other wrist, wait for a few minutes before applying the third scent to the inside of your elbow. It may sound convenient to be able to try 3 fragrances all at the same time,  but bear in mind that you might not be able to fully maximize each perfume aroma and may end up smelling odd.

Is it normal that I can’t smell the fragrance I’m wearing after a while?

Most senses get tired after constant stimulation. The sense of smell cuts off within minutes because all you can smell is your own perfume and once you become used to it  you might think  that your fragrance disappeared but others can still smell it.

Fragrance Review: Mitsouko Perfume

Guerlain Mitsouko Perfume

Mitsouko perfume is a feminine fragrance crafted by perfumer Jacques Guerlain. Mitsouko  has been on the market since 1919. Its creation was inspired by a story  during the war between Russia and Japan in 1905 regarding an impossible love between Mitsouko, the wife of Japanese Admiral Togo, and a British officer. Mitsouko was the heroine of Claude Farrčre’s novel ‘La bataille’. When both men went to war and Mitsouko waited which of the two will come back for her.

The bottle:

The bottle was designed by Raymond Guerlain in 1912; a reused bottle of L’Heure Bleue’s bottle due to the shortages during World War I. The cap is shaped like an inverted heart while the body was made with flowing lines and curvilinear shoulder.  L’Heure Bleue’s and Mitsouko’s bottle somehow is a stylistic symbol of the opening and closing of the war.

Fragrance Notes

Top: Bergamot, Lemon, Mandarin, Neroli

Middle: Peach, Rose, Clove, Ylang-Ylang, Cinnamon

Base: Oakmoss, Labdanum, Patchouli, Benzoin, Vetiver.

It opens a refreshing floral fruity blend which eases to a lovely floral heart. There is a soft accent of peach in the heart which gives a subtle quality and a teasing gourmand impression. The dry down settles to a spicy, warm and mossy base dominated by oakmoss and spices.

Overall, Mitsouko offers a warm, comfortable scent that exudes elegance  and  timeless appeal which transcends time. It’s no wonder why it’s still loved by many even in modern age. It has a well-mannered composition, from the citrusy brisk opening subdued by floral composition then balanced by warm woody dry down.

The scent is more like a calm and composed woman who is confident, knows what she wants and how to get it exactly.

Fragrance Review: Monsieur de Givenchy

Givenchy’s Legend – Monsieur de Givenchy

Monsieur de Givenchy

Fragrance Notes:

Top Notes: Lemon, Cinnamon, Pepper, Carnation
Middle Notes: Lemon Verbena, Lavender
Base Notes: Oak Moss, Musk, Sandalwood

Monsieur de Givenchy  is a classic and elegant fragrance launched in 1959 by Givenchy perfume house. It was the first ever redolence for men released by the design house and it is fascinating to think, that after a couple of decades, MDG has been and still remains as a signature fragrance for classic and urbane gentlemen. It is, indeed, an olfactory manifesto – A True Legend of Masculine Fragrances!

Classified as Citrus Aromatic fragrance, Monsieur de Givenchy is a coalescence of precious nuances. The top notes offer a dry, bitter accord of citrus and floral notes. It’s a refreshing scent, but not overly done. It yields a subtle and a revitalizing floral aroma. Give it a couple of minutes, the redolence eventually evolves into a submissive fusion of woody accords, offering an alluring whiff that can captivate anyone. Once settled, it echoes a pleasant dry down of moss, richness of musk and sandalwood.

Monsieur de Givenchy’s harmonious natural notes offer sophistication and elegance, enhanced with its delicate trait, teeming with class. It is a vintage fragrance that surprises with its calming yet not so typical citrus scent. A versatile essence that can be worn any occasion of any season of the year.

Its simplicity boosts its elegance, making it easy and enjoyable to be worn despite of the demanding aura of the fragrance as an image of a well composed man. The perfume understands the quote: “Less is more”, which allows it to possess a unique and mysterious authority that gravitates attention. There is no doubt that MDG’s  is a masterpiece. However, longevity and silage are average, but knowing how to wear it may do the trick.

Have you ever been a fan of valuable vintage? Monsieur de Givenchy is an iconic classic that shouldn’t be out of your list – a must have for every man’s collection of fragrances.

Fragrance Review: Obsession Perfume by Calvin Klein

“I didn’t want an old-fashioned recipe, I wanted something direct, sensuous and provocative, which represents the way I feel about women.”~ Calvin Klein (On the launch of this perfume)ob

Fragrance Review: Valentina Poudre

Valentina Poudre by Valentino

Valentina Poudre

Fragrance Notes

Top Notes: Powdery Notes

Middle Notes: Tuberose, Iris

Base Notes: Vanilla, Sandalwood

Valentina Poudre is an oriental floral fragrance for women launched by the House of Valentino this year, 2016. This new heavenly scent was crafted by perfumer Aurelien Guichard.

I love powdery scents, it’s light and not overbearing and very versatile to use. It doesn’t have that tendency to suffocate people around you and a danger to make someone puke (lol).

When I read about Valentino’s Valentina Poudre I was drawn into it and got immediately excited to get a sniff at it. Who wouldn’t be?  I’m not much into those heavy notes sniffer; I prefer something that my nose would understand easily not having to guess what that kind of smell is. Looking at Valentina Poudre’s notes, it really sang at me. A simple composition that can be easily understood, finally a perfume for me.

Last weekend I headed to Nordstrom to run an errand for my mom and of course to finally try this fragrance. Upon spraying, the first thing that came in my mind is that it smelled familiar. A close friend of mine is a certified Hypnotic Poison addict; they smelled alike. But then after just perhaps a minute or two I realized the difference. Valentina Poudre is much more powdery compared to Dior’s Hypnotic poison. It is much drier, almost dusty, and not as sweet or Smokey. Both fragrances were truly named according to what the scent is supposed to be. Hypnotic poison, a much darker, deeper and sweeter scent with a powerhouse sillage and longevity while Valentino’s Valentina Poudre lived by its name (poudre=powder); it’s light and nothing heavy even the projection and longevity is too light which is perhaps the downside of this heavenly aroma for others, as for me I don’t mind spraying again after 2-3 hours.

I couldn’t stop myself from buying this beautiful scent, after smelling it, it grew more on me. This fragrance reminds me of a high end, a very expensive powder that I came across.  The mild, sweet floral scent makes me feel very young, it makes me smile.

Overall, this luxurious fragrance is divine feminine aroma. It has a graceful youthful scent that  will make you feel like a delicate charming lady.

The bottle suits the fragrance perfectly. The matte pinkish rose even looks just as powdery as the fragrance itself. It’s very feminine, sensuous and elegant.

Perfume Tips

5 PERFUME MISTAKES TO NEVER DO AGAIN

333

Applying perfume is just a piece of cake and seems to be the least complicated task to do, right? But, who would’ve thought that we can still do it WRONG? So, here are the common perfume mistakes and tips on how to avoid them.

#1 YOU APPLY PERFUME ON YOUR CLOTHES1

DO NOT spray perfume on a fabric. It only does not stain but fabric alone can alter the smell of your perfume and make it unpleasant.

WHAT TO DO:

Instead, spray perfume after you got out of the shower because your skin is still fresh and whatever you put on will be better absorbed. Also, fragrances are designed and formulated to be applied onto the skin where it can interact with body heat and will definitely smell the best.

2

#2  YOU DO NOT PUT ON MOISTURIZER BEFORE YOU APPLY

DO NOT apply perfume without moisturizing. If you want to maximize the longevity of your perfume, make sure to moisturize first to give the fragrance something to hold on to as they tend to last longer onto moisturized skin as per to dry skin.

WHAT TO DO:

You can do what they call “layering.” You can use a moisturizer with the same fragrance as your perfume to make it much more long-lasting or you can also use an “unscented” product if the scent from this technique is too much for you.

11121212

#3 YOU ARE SPRAYING IT TOO CLOSE ON YOUR SKIN

DO NOT spray it directly on your skin. You don’t

want to have a pool of liquid on your body because in this way; you are just wasting a lot of product, making the scent too strong and worst, changing the smell.

WHAT TO DO:

When applying perfume, you have to make sure you spray from a distance, a few inches away from your body and just gently let the mist fall on your skin on its own.

#4 RUBBI1111NG YOUR WRISTS TOGETHER AFTER APPLYING

DO NOT rub it in. Your body is already warm enough for the perfume and when you rub your wrists together, you are just creating more heat. This will burn the top notes much more quickly which will change the smell, make the scent go away faster and lessen the lifespan of your perfume all throughout the day.

WHAT TO DO:

Instead, just simply spray or dab it on and let it dry.

5555

#5 YOU MIX DIFFERENT SMELLS

DO NOT mix. If you use different body products with different scents or even different perfumes, these might not go well together and give you a strong and unpleasant smell.

WHAT TO DO:

Alternatively, try to buy products from the same line with the same smell
like shower gel, body lotion and perfume because these are designed to complement each other, which is also called “layering” as mentioned before. But, if you do not like to do this you can just simply buy products with a mild scent or just go with the unscented stuff.

That’s it! Now you know what to do and what not to do when applying perfume, you will be able to fully use your perfume to its maximum potential.

Fragrance Review: Bonbon by Viktor&Rolf

photocredit: @betulomer_
photocredit: @betulomer_

Launched in 2014,Bonbon by Viktor&Rolf is a very inviting scent that fuels your desire for pleasure and self-indulgence. It is almost like a delicious dessert placed in a bottle that creates a delectable experience for anyone who wears it. For me, it is like the bigger sister of Flowerbomb, very sweet but very seductive; even better and more desirable-in my personal opinion.

Fragrance Notes:

Top notes: Caramel, Mandarin, Orange, Peach

 Middle notes: Orange blossom, Jasmine

Base notes: Cedar, Guaiac wood, Sandalwood, Amber

Upon spraying, I thought this will be one of those generic sweet fragrances in the market and would be too sweet for my liking because of the caramel and sugary notes in it BUT, I was totally wrong. After 10 minutes, I almost gave up on this one, but it started to transfigure into a very amazing scent that I can’t get enough of. I instantly smelled citrus and peach together with a subtle hint of sandalwood and cedar, but mostly the caramel note lingered on me all day, which I must say has a very strong lasting power. I also call this the “grown up and better version” of Flowerbomb because you’ll get the same impression that Flowerbomb gives but with more depth and appeal to it.

After a couple of days of wearing Bonbon, I’ve come to a conclusion that it has a perfect balance of sweetness combined with sultry and classy notes making it both very sweet and seductive at the same time. Yes, it is full of caramel goodness making the dry-down very sweet but as the time goes by, it will transform to a much deeper aroma that turns it to a classy & sophisticated perfume with a touch of sexiness. Let’s also not forget about its staying power. With just a couple of sprays here and there, it stayed on me for good 8 hours and it also has an amazing sillage. Few sprays and your good to go.

It is a little bit pricey compared to other perfumes but I don’t mind splurging a little bit more if this is the kind of perfume I can get. Sometimes, you just have to spend more to get more. Just consider it as one of your investments for yourself. Treat yourself once in a while! If you are not really sure whether you will like this or not, you can always buy the mini size first or even try it in a store. Don’t forget to wait for a couple of minutes to let the notes fully settle on your skin before making a decision whether to buy or not to buy this product.

Overall, Bonbon is perfect for any woman who wants to enjoy sweet perfumes without being “too sweet” and still have a mature and alluring vibe. Indeed, this is a sweet and delightful masterpiece that everyone should try!
